Australia is a big place. It has a total area just shy of 3 million square miles. It is no wonder then, that they have developed quite a thing for big stuff. Yes, throughout the country there are numerous incidences, usually near highways, of oversized versions of everything from pineapples to prawns, read on…

The Big Pineapple

This goliath version of the prickly fruit can be found in Nambour, Queensland. You can actually get inside it where you’ll find information on everything from pineapple to, err… another pineapple. It measures 16 metres and has been a distinctive feature on the big things to see scene since 1971.

The Big Shrimp

Located in Ballina, New South Wales, this roof mounted crustacean would certainly crush you’re barbeque were you to throw it on said outdoor grill. The shrimp or prawn (does anyone know the difference?) is a delicious pink and features a viewing area too, neato!

The Big Golden Guitar

This 12 metre tall fibreglass musical monster is located outside the Country Music Gallery of Stars Wax Museum in Tamworth, New South Wales. The guitar is an over-over-sized version of the award presented to winning artists at the Country Music Awards. And if this didn’t all fit thematically together enough already, Tamworth is considered the home of country music and the big ol’ guitar was unveiled by none other than Slim Dusty!

The Big Lobster

Ok, I feel including two marine dwelling creatures from the same genus is a little weak. But how could I not! Look at it, the big lobster is magnificent! It’s on the princess highway, Kingston SE, South Australia and measures 18 metres tall, that’s huge. It is appropriately coloured to represent the boiled version seeing as it sits astride a restaurant that by all accounts has a reputation for quality seafood. Definitely a favourite thing among big things.

The Big Galah

If you don’t go to see this big galah then you’re a big galah. It’s in Kimba, South Australia, the town is pretty small, and doesn’t feature much else other than the Half Way Across Australia gift shop the enormous bird sits in front of…

The Big Potato

Our big stuff round up concludes in Robertson county, which as everyone (in Oz) knows is potato country, hence why there is a giant potato! Now, I’m not the first to suggest this, but it’s likeness to a potato is questionable and it isn’t exactly what one would call a visual treat. As such it has been given some rather unpleasant nicknames, but I’m sure you can imagine what they might be…
